The Pursuit of Potential
Year: 2019
Location: Ibadan, Nigeria
Category: Documentary Photography
This series follows a group of local boxers training in makeshift gyms, fighting for strength and discipline without the luxury of equipment, sponsorship, or the promise of reward. Day after day, they push their limits in pursuit of something invisible yet vital: potential.
For me, this project was more than photography — it was personal. At the time, I was immersed in documenting ordinary lives around me, often against the advice of friends who insisted I should chase fashion or beauty photography, where money and opportunity seemed more certain. To them, documentary work felt like a dead end. To me, it was the only thing I knew how to do: follow my curiosity, stay close to truth, and photograph what mattered.
These images are not about fame or fortune, but about persistence. They capture young men who fight without glory, who train in obscurity, yet embody resilience and passion. In many ways, they mirror my own journey — doing the work I loved, even when it seemed it would never pay.
